Hey all,
So I always have trouble reading the four of cups. The book is clear, but the symbolism itself is vague to me. It's one of the cards I don't connect to as well as the others.
Any ideas?
Happy reading!

Wed, April 13, 2005 - 2:30 PMStevee's take on the Tarot is based on Crowley's Thoth deck. You might wanna check out what ol uncle Al has to say about the card in his writings (777 for example). You might even try googling "Four of cups" and "Luxury" to see what comes up.
i personally don't do single card readings or read the cards in isolation. so for me there are no fixed meanings for the cards. the cards change depending on where they are placed in the lay out and what other cards are in the reading.
for example, are there any other cups in the reading, which numbers??
are there any other fours of different suits in the reading??
is the card upside down?? to me this usually indicates discomfort or hestitancy or some kind of unwillingness to embrace the qualities suggested by the card.
for me, the fours in each suit represent a kind of impermanant stability and security for the moment (the emperor card is major arcana # 4), the fours are like a calm before the storm which gets shaken up once the fives come onto the scene. so it's importnat to remember not to get too attached to what seems like safety and comfort brought about by a temporary instance of luxury.
one method that works for me with the cards is to imagine them as snapshots that you took while on vacation. each picture has a story behind it that is kinda frozen in the moment. when you show you vacation pictures to different people, you will explain them differently depending on who they are and their relationship to you and their knowledge of your life and circumstances.
this approach is kinda like the opening credits to the HBO show "Carnival" where the Tarot cards come into motion. there's a lot of dynamism being protrayed in each Tarot snapshot ;D
